Don’t be a dummy when choosing a dummy…

Natursutten natural soother BPA free dummy

I remember being adamant that my baby would never use a pacifier – thinking they were just one of those devices to make up lazy or poor parenting. If MY baby had all the love and cuddles he needed, there would be no use for a nasty plastic soother … right?

Wrong. Two weeks after the birth of my son, and hours of cuddles and rocking and breast feeding and many many tears later (from both me and him), my mother gently suggested that I try a soother. I hated the idea of it, I hated the look of it and absolutely hated that it was called a “dummy” here in Australia, and I resisted further. One more week of sleep deprivation and tears and I gave in. To my surprise, slight disappointment and tremendous relief – it worked. Like magic.

But then I had to worry about the dangers of BPA, phthalates and other toxins, as well as keeping it sterilized. Thankfully, I discovered Natursutten pacifiers, made from natural, sustainable rubber (from the tree Hevea brasiliensi), which is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. They are softer than silicone, and extremely hygienic because they are moulded in one piece, so there are no joints or cracks where dirt and bacteria can accumulate.

Natursutten packageAs the name suggests, Natursutten means “natural soother” in Danish, where the company is located. And since they are made from natural rubber, you avoid allergy-causing substances, artificial colours, cancer-causing substances, hormone-disturbing substances, chemical softeners, parabens, BPA, PVC and phthalates. Hooray!

For anyone who has seen them before, you’ll recognize Natursutten’s unique colour and shape – which I think looks kind of cute and reminiscent of those old cartoon character drawings of babies … or perhaps even Maggie Simpson?

Natursutten soothers come in two styles (round and orthodontic); and three sizes (small 0-6m; medium 6-12m and large 12m+) and are available now at Itty Bitty Greenie. RRP $9.95.

Putting an end to a toxic relationship

T.O.M organic tampons

When it comes to that time of the month, most of us don’t think twice about what we’re using for “feminine protection” – we’re usually too busy worrying about how to deal with cramps, headaches and if there’s enough chocolate in the house to last the duration.

But since all things organic seem to be on my radar these days, I recently came across T.O.M organic tampons and thought they were worth a second look.

T.O.Ms are the brainchild of Melbourne entrepreneur Aimee Marks, who, five years ago while studying at RMIT, was designing a new brand of tampons. Through her research, she discovered conventional tampons contain ingredients like rayon, viscose and polypropylene with a cotton string. In simple terms: tree pulp, synthetics and plastics, not to mention the fact that cotton is one of the most highly sprayed crops on the planet.

Marks went on to develop a new line of tampons that are better for the environment and for women’s health. T.O.M (time of the month… get it?) tampons are the world’s only Australian Certified Organic tampon brand and a healthy solution for women and the environment. They’re not only toxin-free, but biodegradable too, so unlike other feminine products, they won’t hang around in landfills for generations to come.

So when Aunt Flo comes to town, the relationship (and how you deal with it) doesn’t have to be so toxic after all…

Itty Bitty Greenie is pleased to be partnering with T.O.M this month and if you join our mailing list you can win a 2-month supply of T.O.Ms certified organic tampons.

Imaginations soar with Little Wings

Little Wings organic fashion

I’ve always admired those ultra-creative types who have a wonderful way of injecting their personal style into everything they do, and I recently met an Australian mum who has achieved that with grandeur for her boutique clothing label Paper Wings.

Michelle Fallon and her partner, Jason Gibaud, have an “art meets life” story, as their backgrounds in costume design, feature film production, architecture and interior design motivated them to create truly unique and inspired clothing for their own little girls.

Fallon and Gibaud have worked on the sets of such movies as Star Wars, Moulin Rouge and Peter Pan, creating elaborate clothing meant for the big screen. So when it came to dressing their own little ones, you can understand why mainstream labels didn’t quite cut it. The two strive to create beautiful clothing meant for play, and inspired by a child-like sense of imagination and fantasy.

Little Wings organic clothingWhile Paper Wings has been around for a few years and has fans all over the world, I am more excited about their newest extension of the brand, an all-organic line of clothing for babies aged 0-2 called Little Wings. Each piece in this collection is made from the finest 100% organic cotton jersey to ensure softness on baby’s delicate skin, and on first impressions alone, anyone can see that these are special pieces.

You’ll find frilled leggings printed with a gorgeous pattern of storybook dolls, and dresses emblazoned with fairies, pixies and other enchanting characters - all designed to spark the imagination of your baby girl while hard-wearing enough for a day of play.

Check out our favourite pieces from the Little Wings collection at Itty Bitty Greenie, and let your imagination fly!

The Baby Burrito

Before I had my first child, I’ll admit I was slightly intimidated by the concept of swaddling. Newborns always look so cozy when wrapped snugly in a nice soft blanket – but would I ever be able to master the wrapping technique affectionately known as the “baby burrito”? And how is it even possible to wrap a wriggly baby so neatly?

Well, I soon learned that it’s not only possible, but the tradition goes back as far as human history itself, and babies love it. For generations, mothers have recreated the secure and cozy feeling of being in the womb by swaddling and, more recently, scientific evidence has proven that babies who are swaddled sleep more peacefully because being wrapped snugly prevents spontaneous body movements from waking them up during the night.

In 2002, the Journal of Applied Physiology wrote that swaddled infants stay in REM sleep (the most restorative, deepest sleep) longer than those who were not. And there is growing evidence that swaddling may indirectly help prevent SIDS as well.

Once I mastered the swaddling technique (it’s pretty easy actually), I also learned that using a pure cotton muslin blanket is a great choice for baby wrapping – and this was something that seemed second-nature to Australian mothers, but I’d never seen muslin blankets in Canada, where I grew up.

Muslin is finely woven and breathable, making it ideal for swaddling because it has a natural “give” that allows the blanket to be tucked snugly around a baby without being restrictive, and it allows air to circulate around the baby’s body so you don’t have to worry that they’ll overheat in moderate weather. Cotton muslin is also a workhorse fabric – so the natural fibre not only stands up to repeated washings, it becomes softer – and better – with age.

All these reasons were motivation enough for one Aussie mother to start her own company, Aden + Anais, when she moved to America and couldn’t find muslin blankets. Raegan Moya-Jones designed the now-famous muslin swaddle blankets large enough to be useful not only for swaddling, but for stroller covers, nursing shields, tummy time blankets and burping cloths.

If the photo collection on her website is any indication, Aden + Anais blankets also seem to be the item of choice when celebrity moms want to shield their babies from the lenses of paparazzi cameras.

Closer to home, Aden + Anais has launched a new line of organic muslin blankets that I’m proud to offer at Itty Bitty Greenie. Not only do they come in some gorgeous prints, but each blanket has its own matching muslin bag, so there is no need for additional plastic packaging or tags. That’s what I call eco-fabulous – Check out the full range here.

Itty Bitty Babes in Arms

Babes in ArmsOne of those activities that many parents seem to miss once they have children is going to the movies (it used to be so easy before you needed to pay a babysitter on top of the price of a movie ticket!)

But when my son was in his first year, one of my absolute favourite outings was going to the “Babes in Arms” sessions at my local movie theatre, where prams are welcome and crying babies are not met with frowns from fellow moviegoers. What could be better than going for a walk on a sunny morning, grabbing a coffee and sitting down to watch the latest movie, while still having the freedom to feed and cuddle your baby at the same time?

Well … there is one thing. Itty Bitty Greenie is holding a raffle at each Babes in Arms session at Melbourne’s Westgarth Cinema throughout the month of August. Every Wednesday, one lucky moviegoer will win a $50 gift voucher to use at our online retail shop. That’s four chances to win a free shopping spree!

We’re showcasing some of our wares in the theatre lobby as well, so please come by and say hi to Aidan and I.
