eco-fabulous finds for kids

From plant … to potty … to plant?

EcoLife biodegradable potty

My son has proudly reached the potty-training stage and I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to never having to change nappies again.

So I’ve been thinking (and reading) a lot lately about ways to approach the whole process, and I started with a trip to a local baby supply store to see what was out there in terms of “potties”. All I can say is that this, like many experiences of buying products for my child, was overwhelming.

Is it better to get the seat that goes on top of your toilet? Or the separate potty that sits on the floor? What about the travel potty? And there are ones with Thomas the Tank or Dora the Explorer and every other kids brand you can think of. Should I let my son choose? Why are they all PLASTIC? Can they be recycled? What do you do with it when you’re done? Unlike toys or clothes, a potty is surely not something most people would hand down to someone else – so do all these potties become landfill?

EcoLife biodegradable pottyThere has to be another option, I thought. And it turns out there is. I have found an eco-friendly version of a potty that’s new, and has some pretty nifty features. For one, it’s made from recycled plant materials that biodegrade naturally. Really?

Yes. EcoLife International has created a potty made from bamboo and rice husks, that have been ground into a fine powder and then blended with biodegradable resin to form the potty seat, which looks exactly like most standard plastic potties in shape and size.

You can use it and clean it in exactly the same way as any plastic potty, and once your child is (finally!) done using it, then it’s time for a little lesson about recycling and gardening that is sure to be rewarding. You can plant the potty in your garden with some seeds and water, and soon it will biodegrade and turn into something beautiful! How’s that for incentive to use the potty?

The eco-potty also gets extra points for using minimal packaging – using only a small cardboard sleeve that is made from recycled paper and is also recyclable.

And for those worried that the eco potty won’t stand up to repeated washings or exposure to sunlight, there’s no need for concern – EcoLife tests these potties rigorously and they are said to have a life-span of at least a year.  (It will only start to biodegrade after it’s been planted in your garden). With a price tag of $19.95 that’s pretty good value.

The EcoLife biodegradable potty is now available for the first time in Australia at Itty Bitty Greenie  – click here for more details.

Greenie goes pink

pink morning tea
These days it’s a safe bet (but unfortunate fact) to say that most people have someone in their lives who has been affected by breast cancer, and I am no exception. That is why, when October rolls around, taking part in various initiatives to help raise awareness and funds for the cause becomes a priority.

This time around, with the recent launch of Itty Bitty Greenie’s online eco-shop, I took the opportunity to run a month-long “think pink” campaign offering 30% off a different pink item from the store each day in October (it’s amazing how much stuff for little girls is pink!), and also donating $1 from every sale to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Itty Bitty Greenie also took part in a few other breast cancer benefits, including a “Girls Night In” online chat & charity auction hosted by Connect to Aussie Mums, and a pink morning tea hosted by local business owners Lisa Dale from Signed, Sealed, Delivered, and Lisele Rankin from Cupcakes by L. At both events we donated one of our organic pink baby dolls, made by Dandelion Earth Friendly Goods, a company that also supports the cause by donating a percentage of the profits from each doll sold to various breast cancer research projects.

The morning tea was held at Lisa’s home in Glen Waverley and what a day it was! Other local businesses set up stalls and donated food and prizes for a silent auction, there was pink champagne and goodie bags and even a petting zoo for the kiddies. Needless to say, I was impressed – and how could I not be, when so many people come together and donate their valuable time and effort to the cause?

I’d like to thank Lisa & Lisele, Peace & Katy from Connect2Mums and all of Itty Bitty Greenie’s customers, followers and “likers” who supported these initiatives. I am happy to report that together we have raised more than $2500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Imaginations soar with Little Wings

Little Wings organic fashion

I’ve always admired those ultra-creative types who have a wonderful way of injecting their personal style into everything they do, and I recently met an Australian mum who has achieved that with grandeur for her boutique clothing label Paper Wings.

Michelle Fallon and her partner, Jason Gibaud, have an “art meets life” story, as their backgrounds in costume design, feature film production, architecture and interior design motivated them to create truly unique and inspired clothing for their own little girls.

Fallon and Gibaud have worked on the sets of such movies as Star Wars, Moulin Rouge and Peter Pan, creating elaborate clothing meant for the big screen. So when it came to dressing their own little ones, you can understand why mainstream labels didn’t quite cut it. The two strive to create beautiful clothing meant for play, and inspired by a child-like sense of imagination and fantasy.

Little Wings organic clothingWhile Paper Wings has been around for a few years and has fans all over the world, I am more excited about their newest extension of the brand, an all-organic line of clothing for babies aged 0-2 called Little Wings. Each piece in this collection is made from the finest 100% organic cotton jersey to ensure softness on baby’s delicate skin, and on first impressions alone, anyone can see that these are special pieces.

You’ll find frilled leggings printed with a gorgeous pattern of storybook dolls, and dresses emblazoned with fairies, pixies and other enchanting characters - all designed to spark the imagination of your baby girl while hard-wearing enough for a day of play.

Check out our favourite pieces from the Little Wings collection at Itty Bitty Greenie, and let your imagination fly!

Connect and win

For parents who like to keep up to date on the latest products and services for their children, the Melbourne Pregnancy Babies and Children’s Expo is a fabulous one-stop shop, and we’re pleased Itty Bitty Greenie is a part of the show this year.

Stop by the Connect2Mums stand and enter the competition to win one of three beautiful prize packs. There’s a baby prize pack, a mums prize pack and a children’s prize pack, which includes a Green Toys recycling truck from Itty Bitty Greenie!

Also, the first 1,000 visitors to stop by and say hi at the Connect2Mums stand will receive one of their popular gift bags, loaded with goodies and special offers from businesses in the Connect2Mums community.

The Melbourne Pregnancy Babies and Children’s Expo is October 22-24 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
